The COVID-19 pandemic poses unprecedented health, economic, and
financial stability challenges. The necessary containment measures to limit the
spread of the virus are causing a dramatic decline in economic activities. As a
result, the 2020 global outlook has shifted from an expected growth of more
than 3 percent to a sharp contraction of 3 percent – much worse than the output
loss during the 2008-09 global financial crisis. This presentation will discuss
the current global economic outlook, outline the risks and vulnerabilities of
major economies, and assess the financial stability challenges posed by the
coronavirus pandemic.
